In the year 2016, original, live-action musicals are pretty much extinct. In a way, romance films are too unless it’s also a comedy or there is at least one explosion. Leave it to Damien Chazelle – writer/director of Whiplash, 2014’s best film – to smash the two genres together, resurrecting them from the dead, with his new feature La La Land. The new musical stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as an aspiring actress and jazz pianist who fall for each other in Los Angeles. This whole film is a throwback to a forgotten era and has an unmistakably retro look and feel. This new trailer is set to a gorgeous new song called ‘Audition.’ You can watch and hear below:

Stone and Gosling are a pair with dynamite chemistry, as seen before in Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Gangster Squad, so this film could probably coast by on charm alone. Thankfully, it seems like the cast and crew is not holding back with this one, utilizing bright colors and fantastical dance sequences paired with a beautiful score and memorable songs.

After the wild success of Whiplash and a cast that, along with Stone and Gosling, includes J.K. SimmonsJohn LegendRosemarie DeWitt and more, La La Land is definitely one of our most anticipated films of the year.

La La Land is in theaters December 2.

Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.
